Goodbye Capt. Cosmic

Saturday, January 10th, 2009
bob6.jpg

Any self respecting Bay Area nerd knew Bob Wilkins from his days as the host of “Creature Features” and “Captain Cosmic” (my secret crypto-code fan club card is number 08236 in case you are interested) on Channel 2 (KTVU) during that bygone age of the mid to late 70′s. Bob passed away on January 7, 2009 due to complications from Alzheimers. Both of his shows had a profound effect on my life and Bob’s enthusiasm for all things Horror and Sci-Fi has fueled my passion for VFX for as long as I can remember. This is the man (along with his faithful side-kick 2T2) that single handedly introduced me to Ultraman, Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robots, Starblazers and who could forget Bambi vs Godzilla. I don’t know if he set out to do anything more than capitalize on the Star Wars craze that was sweeping the nation at the time, but whatever the reason Wilkins ended up bringing a lot of joy to the kids of the Bay Area. So long Bob, thanks, and remember “Truth Prevails”.

Animation Guild Shatters L.A. Times’ “Vision Of Tomorrow”

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009
massanimation_b.jpg

Steve Hulett has posted a scathing criticism of the new crowd sourced via Facebook animation project Mass Animation. According to an L.A. Times editorial

Through Facebook, Mass Animation invited the public to create scenes for its first short video, “Live Music.” The company supplied the animation software, the story, backgrounds, characters and audio. Animators whose work is chosen will receive $500 per scene. All told, the project will cost about $1 million and take six months to complete, a fraction of the money and time required for a comparable Hollywood project.

Hulett takes the position that this is unfair to the participants and just another case of a Hollywood bigwig out to exploit the animation community. He states

if the editorial reflects reality, (Mass Animation) is keen on owning the content, making the animators low-paid sub-contractors.

This would make a little more sense to me if the project was not an opt-in proposition. People who submit their work are hoping for a break, something young folks would pay for these days. My question to the guild… How are new animators, passionate about the work they do, supposed to get into the industry?

Chris Dane Owen’s VFX Tour de’ Force

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Alright, this is just to good to be true. I can’t stop watching this and thinking to myself “This is why so many smart folks spent years of their lives conceiving of, and building computer graphics hardware and software”. It seems that the entirety of our industry has culminated into this single event. The release of Chris Dane Owen’s “Shine on Me” music video. Do you like “porn quality” lighting and costumes? How about split screen swordplay? Throw in a healthy dose of stock footage, a lime green guitar and some flying dragons that look stiffer than CG guy in a Yoga class and you’ve got yourself one heck of a…

Well, I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s 100% pure awesome. Chris’ website credits “Academy Award winning special effects artist Robert Short” as the Director. Roberts’ IMDB profile shows a long list of credits for special effects make-up and VFX work. It does not explain how the incredible Lando-style mustache that Chris wears in the video was created. I’ll keep checking the website for a special features section.

VFX School Now Open – Tuition? Free!

Monday, December 1st, 2008

VFXHack fan and all around great guy Agrapha, has compiled a plethora of VFX links(266 to be exact) on YouTube. There is some fantastic stuff here, how-tos and interviews from projects old and new covering a variety of subject ranging from stop motion and animatronics to compositing and miniatures. You kill a few hours on the Dark Crystal stuff alone! Another highlight is Walt himself walking us through the construction of Pirates Of The Caribbean. Check this video out and please post any ideas you may having explaining the babe with the riding crop.

RetroHack: 1980s Zgrass Demo

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Two vids detailing the the super sweet Zgrass realtime raster graphics system. Be sure to check out the Tom Defanti’s geek regalia in the first clip. It takes a lot of guts to pull off a tie that wide with a denim jacket.

20 IMG Archtypes

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008
mandrill.jpg

A terra cotta bunny, a playboy centerfold and a Mandril. What do these things have in common you ask? If your answer was the cast list to the greatest YouTube video of all time you’d be wrong (that would be cool though). The correct answer is that these are all images used and re-used in the testing process of creating digital imagery. The folks over the unfortunately named Art Fag City have put together a post of 20 CG Image Archetypes for your browsing pleasure. Lots of good history and links here. Take a look.

Jericho Fans Want A New Home – File Under Longshot

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

jerichoNewHome.jpg

Check out this snapshot of a billboard in Studio City, Ca. It seems that all the Jericho fans that have so kindly responded to my post detailing the effects I did for the Season 2 finally have saved up there pennies to buy some public ad-space to further there cause. Seem crazy? Well, it might if the rabid fans hadn’t already brought the show back from the dead once already with a well coordinated write-in campaign. Who knows if this works out I could be on the call sheet for Season 3.

Radiohead Video – Cool Laser Scanners Out-Franky Franky Goes To Hollywood

Monday, July 14th, 2008

The video proves once and for all that CGI and Radiohead are two great tastes that taste great together. The basic idea is this, screw the cameras 86 the lights scan everything and make the whole piece out of realtime streaming data. The result is imagery so deep in the uncanny valley that it’s cool. This behind the scenes gives a great overview of the technical and creative issues involved. I love the image of Lidar scanner on a dolly. The only problem, “Ready, and, SCAN!” just doesn’t have the right ring to it.

How-To Go Retro

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

retroSnap.jpg

Ever wanted to use a really expensive super-fast modern computer to create a logo design that looks like it was airbrushed on the front of a 70′s T-shirt? Well you’re in luck! Freelance designer Harry J. Frank has posted a nice little tutorial that’s all about the chrome logo and glowing grid that floats in space for no reason (don’t forget the cheesy star filters). All you need is a couple hours of spare time a copy After Effects and an unhealthy nostalgia for electric pink and blue.
