RetroHack – A Look Into The History Of Visual Effects

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

A lot of you young Visual Effects artists out there come into this industry thinking it’s a brave new world. An uncharted territory just waiting to be plundered by your staggering keyboard dexterity and lack of the rudimentary social skills it takes to carry on a the most basic of conversations. But this is not so Padwans! Many a nerd before you has spent weekend after weekend away from the company of the opposite sex to make movie magic happen. In our new RetroHack segment we hope to educate those who know no VFX before the Matrix.

First up this tasty clip is a How-To of the Robert Abel produced spot “Brilliance”, more commonly known as Sexy Robot.

Notice the primitive tech featured in this vid. Things “switches”,”knobs”, and most shocking of all “shoulder pads” are now extinct to today’s CGI professionals. The most amazing thing about this that the “eight grueling weeks” of production mentioned in this segment has remained an industry standard for commercial projects. In some ways, all that has changed is the amount of polygons and pixels used to create a spot. Oh yeah and the amount of people in the biz has also increased 1,000 times over. And you thought you were the first kid in your cul-de-sac to take mouse in hand to try to make it in Hollywood. Hah!

Dustin Adair’s – We Were Centurians

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

wwcenturians

Ever wondered what would happen if one of Battlestar Galactica’s Cylon Centurions raised some serious philosophical questions about the point of his own existence? This short animation staring cute and cuddly versions of everyones favorite re-imagined chrome toasters, answers the tough questions about life as a human hating robotic slave. Besides having more than enough funny lines for fans of the show, Adair’s film also offers a unique take on character design and a snappy animation style that’s a pleasure to watch.

Microscopy Madness – Carl Burton’s “Drift”

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

drift

Is that a paramecium in your experimental animation thesis, or are you just glad to see me?

Burton tells the story of an amorphous biped floating aimlessly through the across the lens of microscope from your high school biology class. In all seriousness, this is a nice little piece of animation. I do love that gritty pond scum feel.

Animation-Treasures Not Just for Animators

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

hollywood bg

‘s blog Animation – Treasures is mostly known for it’s collection of painstakingly recreated backgrounds from the golden era of Hollywood studio animation. There’s lots of great eye-candy for animation buffs here but also more than a few lessons for VFX folks and heck, anyone in the visual storytelling business. Hans covers a plethora of topics from the use of color to composition, using a wide variety of examples. The visuals are just plain splendid so make sure you take the time to browse the site directly and skip the RSS reader.

3 Great Music Videos with Lo-Fi VFX

Friday, July 20th, 2007

I’ve run across a few music videos of late that have some pretty well done and creative VFX that might get over looked because of their intentionally low-tech style. Enjoy!

TV on The Radio, Me-I

A nice mixed bag of comp CG and traditional stuff here. Found this vid at Nathan Love‘s website, a shop in NYC that specializes in animation and design heavy work. Very nice looking website BTW.

They Might Be Giants, With the Dark

Great stop motion-work from Mizushima Hine for TMBG’s new album. You can also see his stop-mo version of Ana Ng in a hi-rez qt HERE.

Grandaddy, Jed’s Other Poem

Calling this VFX is a stretch even for me. But hey, it was made on a computer (an Apple ][+ to be exact) and it is animated. You can even download an emulator and source code if you want to run the video yourself.

Ratatouille Synesthesia Sequences by Michel Gagné

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Ratatouille Synesthesia

OK, so a big summer animated blockbuster doesn’t really fall into “hack” territory I’ll admit. But, as a fan of the fantastic graphic novel series Flight, I was freaking out at Gagné’s super detailed explanation of how he visualized taste for Brad Bird’s instant classic. All the animations started out hand drawn and then were scanned and comped using a combination of Animo and Photoshop. Michel’s website includes a ton of great media including the soundtrack he used for inspiration and the full frame abstract animations without the CG rat on top.

Unwrapped 2001 Slit Scans

Monday, June 11th, 2007

2001unSlitscan

Here’s an oldy, looks like it was posted in 2002! Some adventurous soul with a little too much time on there hands reverse engineered the Slit Scans from Kubruick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The result is an approximation of the original flat artwork used in the scanning process. Nice!
